No credit check and no deposit
This is the practical difference for a new student. Canadian carriers usually want a credit history you do not have yet. If you cannot show one, the Big Three will typically ask for a refundable deposit of $150 to $300 on the spot — in the same week you are paying first month’s rent and a damage deposit.

It builds your Canadian credit history
Rogers and Fido report monthly payments to Equifax and TransUnion. Paying a postpaid phone bill on time is one of the few ways a newcomer can start building a Canadian credit file, which you will need later for an apartment lease or car finance. - Send your passport and study permit — Canadian carriers require identity verification before activating a number.
- Get your eSIM by email, or have a physical SIM posted to a Canadian address if your phone does not support eSIM.
- Land connected. Your line activates up to 24 hours before you arrive.
Two things to check before you order: that your phone supports eSIM (dial *#06# — an EID number means yes), and that it is unlocked from Grameenphone, Robi, Banglalink or Airtel.

When it is not the right choice
We would rather be straight with you. If you are visiting Canada for under three weeks and nobody needs to phone you, a data-only travel eSIM is cheaper and perfectly adequate. These plans are built for students and workers who are moving there and need a number that rings from day one.

Can I get a Canadian number before leaving Bangladesh?
Yes. You order before you fly and the line activates up to 24 hours before you land, so the number is working when you clear customs and can go on job and rental applications beforehand.
Do I need a Canadian bank account or address to order?
No. You need a passport and your study permit. A Canadian address is only required if you choose a physical SIM by post instead of an eSIM.
Is there a contract?
No contract and no setup fee. You can cancel or change plans later — and since June 2026 Canadian carriers are no longer permitted to charge plan-change or cancellation fees either.
